Mambrui and its golden beach

Arabian elegance and an enchanting stretch of coastline for a wild day out

14-01-2021 di redazione

Twelve kilometres north of Malindi and about thirty kilometres from Watamu, after the bridge over the mouth of the Sabaki River, where flamingos and hippos can be seen and where the vegetation is particularly luxuriant, lies the village of Mambrui.
In the past Mambrui was an important Muslim religious centre, and also hosted the first Chinese to arrive in Kenya by sea. Signs of its respectable history can be seen in the important mosque and the old Arab settlement.
Today the "old town" of Mambrui is little more than a fishing village developed on the large beach that joins the "rive gauche" of Sabaki to the salt pans of Ngomeni. Life is very slow, punctuated by the chanting of the muezzin who calls the faithful to prayer, the donkeys doze between one load and another of water canisters under boababs or centuries-old ficus, and the children, with their festive voices, wander through the narrow alleyways, disappearing into courtyards from which the scents of Swahili specialities come.
Alongside the houses of the locals and a few buildings that are still elegantly Swahili, a number of residential complexes have sprung up along the beach called Che Shale, because of the historic restaurant of the same name with its accommodation huts.
Hotels, residences and terraced houses that usually accommodate Italians.
Lately, the northern part of Mambrui has been embellished with prestigious resorts and high-level complexes.
The real attraction is the golden beach, made up of 'precious' grains of sand which, thanks to the presence of pyrite, colour the skin and glow in the sun's rays, with the wild ocean not protected by a coral reef.
You can drive along it in a four-wheel-drive car, past dunes and sandy stretches that are great for kitesurfing.
It is the ideal place for day trips or for those who want a relaxing holiday in contact with the wild Africa of the sea, without forgetting western comforts. There are several facilities that can offer food and drink during the day and also in the evening, as well as sleeping accommodation.
