Yesterday, the Governor of County Kilifi Amason Kingi has laid the first coral block for the construction of the "Kilifi County Health Complex", a modern hospital in the capital of the region, which also includes Malindi and Watamu.
The project, for which an initial budget of approximately €5 million is foreseen, also foresees that one wing of the clinic will be used for cancer and palliative treatments and pain therapies.
On the north coast of Kenya, up to Mombasa, there is no such facility and even in Mombasa there are very expensive private clinics.
The good news was greeted with enthusiasm by Florence Saumu Kitsao, president of the Elite Hope for Change association, who has been fighting for a long time to give the people of the coast the chance to access pain therapies, in the case of an established illness.
In Kenya, thousands of citizens die of suffering every year, without access to painkillers.
In Kilifi County alone, 1400 cases of cancer were detected last year and 325 patients died.
